NYC winters can be brutal here. With the snowstorms that turn into dirty slush that slowly turns into ice, a little getaway is necessary. From meal deliveries to baking, meal packing, kitchen projects, and meal kit labeling, there’s something you can do that will make a true difference in someone’s life. Performances in NYC

NYC is the heart of musical theater, the arts, and some of the most talented artists in THE WORLD. Take some time to pay it forward and support the arts here since it truly takes a village.

  1. Nutcracker Performances at the NYC Ballet: The Iconic Nutcracker is the reason for the season. There is something so impressive about the way ballerinas move their bodies and stress their muscles yet look so graceful. I salute them for their poise. Check out their calendar and start planning before it gets sold out! See here
  2. The Radio City Rockettes: An iconic performance is that of the Radio City Rockettes. There’s no question their craft and dancing abilities are what put on such a magnificent show. Before you go and say this is a touristy activity, well it is, but even locals go to it. I saw it as a little girl and I hope to see it this year again! Get tickets before it sells out!
  3. Broadway: I mean it’s no question that if you don’t have any plans lined up to fill it with the iconic NYC Broadway scene. There are tons of musicals out on the market that you have to experience. I am a Broadway lover and have quite a thing or two to say about what show to see! Bars in NYC With The Best Views

So if you’re living in NYC or just visiting, there is one thing we all have in common. We want to experience that NYC nightlife because let me tell you, it is so much fun and once you try it once, you’ll be taking weekly flights to NYC. If you know me, you know I love to party. I love the energetic atmosphere and everything that comes with having a great time with friends, dancing to music, and drinking my all-time favorite drink (gin lemonades). For all my top bar recs, check it out here

  1. Red Room: This place is the most lowkey spot in the city and if you’re in Times Square- it’s so close and a destination you need to add to your bucket list. Once you walk in, you’ll see that it’s a very quiet and intimate spot. The lights are dimmed and they even had live performers with my jazz music.PRO TIP: They have happy hour specials from 4-6pm.
  2. The Skylark: I loved this place and would highly recommend going here for a more “classy” night out. I would 100% recommend the cheese spread, hummus, fried chicken burger, and of course, my signature gin lemonade drink!

Winter-Themed Bars in NYC

  1. Magic Hour: This place has been on my bucket list for a while now so it only makes sense to encourage y’all to go as well. In the winter, they have this fun ski gondola decor that gets me so excited for winter fun! Check out their Instagram and reserve a table today!
  2. Ophelia: I saw this on Instagram and needed to recommend it since it is on my bucket list! It looks just like a winter wonderland that you can’t get in the movies. Check out their Instagram and get a table today!

Museums in NYC

  1. The Museum of Sex: The Museum of Sex is more than just what you might think (I’ll just leave that to your own interpretation- we are keeping things PG if you know what I’m saying) I never really had the desire to go here because I thought I would have felt awkward, but it was nothing short of welcoming & informative. Let me just start by saying for $36 you get your money’s worth. There are four floors filled with information and even history on military sex crimes that was super informative and unfortunately terribly saddening too. Some parts might be triggering for some people so just know that they have signs up in case to warn you. After all of the exhibits, there’s FUNLAND, an interactive section of the museum that was soo fun!! We played carnival games & I even won a mermaid tail keychain (dw I already asked them if it was something dirty but it was just a normal keychain) After we got some fun drinks & even got our fortune told by the one & only RUPALLLL! Get Tickets here!
  2. Metropolitan Museum of Art: The MET is honestly my favorite museum of all time. I think it’s also tied with the American Museum of Natural History because I love animals. Overall, the MET is filled with new and exciting exhibits. It’s the reason I’ve been there countless times. One of my favorite exhibits is their Egyptian mummies, hieroglyphics, and replica of the pyramids. This museum will literally make you feel like you’re time-traveling. In one whole day, I only covered half of the museum so it goes to show that you need to visit this place EVERY time you come! Check it out here!

Winter-Themed Restaurants in NYC

  1. Dining Bubbles on Stone Street: While looking at The Brooklyn Guide’s post, I had to add this amazing spot and of course quote the fellow Brooklyn queen! Check out her post and give her a follow!
“One of Stone Street’s highlights is the Route 66 Smokehouse, a BBQ-focused kitchen and beer garden serving up savory treats like the Texas Brisket sandwich, Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich, and Beyond Burger.” Check it out here
  2. Lillie’s Victorian Establishment & 41. Oscar Wilde: I went to both of these places around Halloween time and let me say, they really bring decorations to another level and I am not mad about it. Overall, LOVED the vibes at both of these places!! They have amazing food and a great drink menu. I recommend getting the burrata, frutti de mares, and for drinks -Pheobe Bridges & PJ Harvey!! SO GOOD!! These two places are both owned by the same people. I think that the Oscar Wilde location is a bit cooler but try both out for yourself to see! Make sure to add it to your bucket list!
  3. Rolf’s German Restaurant: If you’re looking to experience the holidays in NYC, then THIS is the spot. Coined “The Most Festive Restuarant”, Rolf’s is filled with intricate & gorgeous ornaments, holiday spirits, and lots of love with every table filled with glee. If you ever dreamed of visiting the Christmas markets in Europe, this restaurant experience will give you just that! Reservations are accepted through phone calls only!

MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT NEAR TIMES SQUARE

  1. Boqueria: You guys know how much I ADORE SPAIN. Everything about the culture is just so rich and exciting and eating here brought back so many amazing memories and just reminded me that I NEED to get myself back to Spain one of these days. The vibes here were absolutely amazing and the place is so cool. We sat at the bar, and ordered the one and only
Jamón Serrano, Paella de Mariscos (Shrimp Paella) – note that this is a dish that you have to share with two people because there is literally so much food, and let me tell you, we ate every single bite!! & of course, we got red sangria to match the Spain vibes.

PRO TIP: Order a little dish of salt and olive oil for the Jamón Serrano. The best way to eat it is by ripping a piece of it and putting it on a piece of bread, then drizzle olive oil and salt and let me tell you, it’s A M A Z I N G. Just remember that the paella takes a while to make (around 40 minutes) so you’ll definitely want to order an appetizer (hint the Jamon Serrano)

Now you know how much of an outdoorsy gal I am and well, this is like no other! When it comes to the winter, nothing excites me more than skiing, hiking, and soaking up the outdoors. Snowboarding/ Skiing & Apres Skiing

  1. Skiing/Snowboarding: Did you know that the first time I skied, I skied directly into a pole? Being the crybaby that I always am, I had a meltdown. Oh and to top this all off, I was 12, a little too old for tantrums, but everyone starts somewhere. I am so glad my family pushed me because it is a lifelong skill. So really, it is never too late to learn! Check out some of these mountains in NY and you can get yourself cheap tickets! If you are a pro skier/border, get the Epic Pass as I did!

Apres Skiing

  1. Apres Skiing: Ahh, a classic, this is a fancy way of saying relaxing haha! Après-skiing is fun because it does not require any, and I mean any physical activity. All it requires is a nice warm fire, a class of your favorite wine, and quality people by your side. My family loves this activity, especially after a long drive upstate! Take this time to rejuvenate and find your inner zen! Nirvana awaits with this one! While your family is ready to hit the slopes, remember that you don’t have to stresss your body and better yet- relax!!

More Winter Outdoor Adventures (Hiking Edition)

  1. Winter Hiking: If you like hiking in the Summer, Spring, and Fall, then you HAVE to try it in the Winter! I mean, after all, there is something so dreamy about walking through fresh snow. This is something that I love to do because again that change in seasons really offers a new perspective on life! Visiting the same place throughout the seasons almost feels like different places altogether. Check out my previous blog post on the best winter hikes! Your Ultimate Guide to the Best 17 Hikes in New York or check out a few highlight hikes down below!

https://thebrooklyniteabroad.com/ultimate-guide-to-hiking-in-new-york-state/

  • Awosting Falls (first pic): A light 1.4-mile hike leads you to this precious gem! Swipe the photo to see the Awosting Falls viewpoint turn from its classic Summer green into the break-taking Fall foliage!

  • Vista and Devil’s Oven via Orange Trail Loop in CT (second picture): So I know this one is an out-of-state hike but trust me, it’s for a good reason. It’s a decent ride from NYC and offers amazing views. It’s really hard to find nice easy hikes for winter especially given how icy and torturous the trails get, so I definitely wanted to highlight this wonderful hike!

More Winter Adventures (Adventure Edition)

Snow-Related Adventures

  1. Snowshoeing: So this is a fancy way of saying walking in the snow, but, do not underestimate it. There is something so therapeutic about taking walks. It is the best because not many people go on walks considering it is too cold, so you have nice peace and quiet. While I walk my dog, I am able to use this time to think about life and how grateful I am for the things that I have. If you have the option to, get yourself a pair of snowshoes, it will make your walk 10x better. If not, then check out these dreamy places to snowshoe on your next trip. Check it out here
  2. Snowtubing: Before I was good at skiing, and this made me so happy. It offers the same thrill as hiking without the risk. Although I strongly urge you to get out of your comfort zone and try new activities, there is no harm in spending a fun winter day tubing. Check out some of these awesome mountains for the best tubing prices.

Perfect For Families

  1. Catskill Mountain Railroad: Whether it is peak fall foliage, summer breezes, winter snowfalls, or flowers blooming in spring, the Catskills Railroad is your ticket to paradise!! I had such an amazing time here and the best part was that everything was super spontaneous. Driving back to NYC from the Adirondack mountains not having much of a plan turned out for the better. I called the office and they mentioned that we can buy tickets upfront even when the train is sold out. The reason is that they overbook in case people don’t show up. Make sure you call in advance in case their plans haven’t changed but 100% would do this again! My family went the week after and they approved. If you didn’t know, my family is hard to please so I hope that did it for you!! Book your tickets here and enjoy!

In the wintertime, they have a really cute Polar Express theme that the whole family will enjoy! This train ride takes you through the Catskills where there are amazing sights of the mountains and farmland. The ride is outdoors so dress accordingly. I would recommend going all the way to the front for the best pictures and views. The closer upfront you are, the fewer people obstruct your view. Since the railroad has windows on all sides, you still get the best views no matter where you go.

Day Trips From NYC

  1. Day Trip From NYC: Snow Tubing & Beer Garden: Included in your ticket is a day full of fun and adventure with a few perks too! Check it out and score your tickets because events like these get sold out quickly!
  • “Round Trip Transportation from NYC
  • 2-hour Snow Tubing Experience at Mountain Creek or a similar operator
  • Visit to Pennings Winter Beer Garden after tubing session
  • Hearty Dinner included
  • One 12oz local beer/cider included
  • Charming & Well-Trained Sourced Adventures Group Leaders”

So There You Have It?

When it comes to winter activities in NYC & beyond, there is so much to do! With that said, what is your favorite winter activity? Is it the endless NYC adventures, the après-ski or the ice skating? For me, it is ALL OF THE ABOVE!  I cannot wait to get my friends together and do the whole shebang! I think I am also the most excited about skiing. With my season pass, I have unlimited access to so many mountains. I have not gone skiing in so long and the last time I went was not that fun. It was too icy and it is definitely a gamble because of the weather, but I am so looking forward to upcoming adventures! Thanks for tuning in and don’t forget to share this with a friend!
