How To Purchase A Home, Pt 1: My Story

When asking yourself, “how to purchase a home” – know that the process is long and tough, but also very rewarding. If you’re looking to purchase a home, you have come to the right place. Ever since I was a young kid, I have always been an overachiever. Maybe it’s my competitiveness or my determination, nonetheless, I did something I didn’t even think was possible. Purchasing a home at the mere age of 24 is mindblowing and was certainly one for the books. I want to share my success with you and tips for the future so that you can become financially free and travel the world, duh! Without further ado, here’s my letter to the CO-OP board that approved me and helped make my dream come true. I hope you enjoy it!

How To Purchase A Home: My Approved Letter

There’s something so inspiring about being from New York City. Maybe it’s the mesmerizing skyscrapers or the stories of people turning rags into riches and breaking generational poverty. From the hundreds of languages you hear in a single walk to the thousands of international restaurants, New York City truly is the world’s melting pot. For the last two years, I’ve lived in Queens, known as “the world’s borough” for the 130 languages spoken by its residents.

That’s what I love about New York City: cultural diffusion at its finest and I’m a prime example. My great-great-grandfather sailed here from Ireland while my grandmother fled the political unrest in Nicaragua. I am the product of my past, having grown up Irish step dancing and eating gallopinto (rice and beans) most nights for dinner. My parents raised me to go to school, get a job, and continue breaking barriers for my family. It’s because of them that here I am, applying for an apartment of my own.

My Upbringing

Along with my upbringing, living on my own for the past two years has taught me that everything comes with hard work (and maybe a little bit of Irish luck). I value and strive for continuous financial security and stability in my life. Since my first job as a New York City lifeguard, I have been financing my schooling, travels, and bills along with saving, building credit, and investing as early as seventeen. I pay my credit cards in full and schedule monthly investments to my ROTH IRA and 401(k) to establish healthy and sustainable routines in my life. It was because of the work ethic I was raised to have that I graduated Summa Cum Laude with both my bachelor’s degree in International Business & Marketing and my MBA from New Paltz University. After landing a job in one of the iconic skyscrapers that have always mesmerized me, I realized during my first commute that adulthood in New York City was no longer just a dream.

My Career

Employed as a Performance Marketing Manager at Hearst Magazines, I analyze data, optimize revenue, and promote e-commerce through paid search for one of the country’s biggest media companies. We’re one of the largest growing teams in the company and one of the few to report over 100+% year-over-year growth. In January, I was promoted for excelling in my role, identifying new revenue opportunities, educating new hires, and strategizing for continued business growth. I also have a second stream of income in the social media management company I founded to help small businesses grow their online presence, boost engagement, and increase sales. I have been using the profits to grow my savings and contribute to my investments.

My Passions & Purpose

In my spare time, my passions for travel blogging, cycling, and volunteering inspire others to be the best versions of themselves. I have still yet to explore all of New York City and I look forward to getting to know Kew Gardens as well as I know Astoria.

My family has instilled valuing experiences over tangible objects and it’s the reason why I am in this position, on the road to becoming a homeowner at the age of twenty-four. The investment in my journey to homeownership has been one of the most rewarding experiences. Becoming a homeowner comes with great responsibility which I welcome. I am humbled that I have the privilege of preparing an application as extensive as this.

Thrilled at the opportunity to have my piece of NYC. An immediate connection with the world’s melting pot and cultural diffusion at its finest: with Dominican, Sri Lankan, Peruvian, and El Salvadorian restaurants all within a five-block radius. There truly is everything you need to feel like a home. I hope to call it mine soon.
