Coney Island NYC Travel Summer

Best Things To Do In Coney Island

Coney Island is a classic destination to visit ESPECIALLY during the summer. It’s in South Brooklyn which for the most part is a pain in the a** to get to, but- one of the best ways to get a true NYC summer experience. It’s known as one of the most popular amusement parks in the country. The iconic Cyclone is now considered a landmark in which many brave tourists and locals alike dare to ride the adrenaline-inducing rollercoaster. Aside from the beach and rides, the atmosphere, energy & spirit here are unmatched, and here are 12 reasons why.

Navigating The Beaches

You can go to Coney Island and not visit the beach. I mean that’d be a bit silly! Instead, I highly recommend knowing the difference between the two beaches in Coney Island as it could determine your whole trip. Along the coast, you have about 16 lifeguard chairs spanning 8 bays. Each set of rocks separates a new bay and among those you have two beautiful beaches.

1. Brighton Beach: The closer you are to Sheepshead Bay, the closer you are to Brighton Beach which is the more laid-back part of the beach. I mean it’s still packed as so many locals come here, but nothing compared to the main area of Coney. Here there are restaurants to eat at and lots of shops as well. Pro Tip: (I’d prefer to visit this beach as it’s much cleaner and the people are a bit more calm).

2. Coney Island Beach: This is your spot if you want to be around the action. Coney Island Beach is right in front of the iconic Wonder Wheel. As mentioned earlier, it could get a bit rowdy here so make sure you watch your belongings and watch your step as well for broken bottles! Pro Tip: On Mondays, they have free movies on the beach & Fridays they have free fireworks

3. Ruby’s: Ruby’s is one of the best spots to get food. They have fresh fish (oysters) & refreshing drinks to cool off after a busy day. Pro Tip: Look around the walls to see the historic photos.

4. Nathan’s: If there’s one food that reminds me of a NYC summer, it’s a hot dog. There’s a location right on the boardwalk and another one on Stiwell Avenue making it impossible NOT to get one. Pro Tip: The Hot Dog Eating Contest is on July 4th

5. Luna Park: Coney Island’s amusement park used to be called Astroland. Going there as a kid literally made my summers 100% more fun. Here you have access to tons of rides. Pro Tip: The Wonder Wheel’s admission is NOT included in your Luna Park Tickets.

6. Wonder Wheel: Another iconic NYC landmark is the one and only, Wonder Wheel. There’s so much history to appreciate and it’s a tradition my family does at least once a year. Pro Tip: There are stationary and swinging carts that take you around above Coney Island twice!

7. Cyclone: Another city landmark is the iconic Cyclone. It’s the oldest rollercoaster here and has been preserved and maintained since it opened in 1927. For only $8 you get to experience the unmatched thrill. Pro Tip: I like going at night!

8. Aquarium: If you’re a fish lover, then this is the place for you! The Coney Island Aquarium is home to hundreds of sea creatures, my favorite being the sharks and sea lions. Pro Tip: You have to check out the shark exhibit, it’s incredible.

Events Happening In Coney Island This Summer

There are so many timely events happening in NYC so don’t feel like you are missing out too much if you can’t go. You will drive yourself insane here if you have FOMO. What’s great about NYC is that no matter where you are there is most likely an event happening and better yet, free. Start filling your calendars with these great events coming up!

9. Friday Night Fireworks: The perfect way to close out the week is by enjoying the fireworks along the iconic Coney Island waterfront.

10. Monday Night Movie Nights: Every Monday, Coney Island hosts movie nights that you can’t miss. Here is the list of movies that you can see here!

11. Mermaid Parade: On June 17th, head over to Coney Island’s iconic Mermaid Parade. It’s truly an experience to not forget. You have real-life mermaids living their best lives and having fun! Check out more information here.

12. Hot Dog Eating Contest: Every July 4th, you have the rare opportunity to witness folks shoving hot dogs in their faces. As gross as it might sound, it’s the entertainment that excites so many that come to watch. In 2021, there was a new world record for a stunning 76 hot dogs & buns eaten in one sitting. All I have to say is jeeez. Pro Tip: It’s right outside Nathan’s Hot Dog on Stillwell Avenue and get there early!

BONUS: Venture to Sheepshead Bay

If you’re looking to spend an additional night in Coney Island or grab a fancy dinner over the water, then Sheepshead Bay is your go-to destination. They have a number of great restaurants, hibachi, seafood & dinner boat rides that will make you want to spend an extra day here. Click the link to read all about it & I hope you enjoy the one and only Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay.

There You Have It

Coney Island is one of my favorite places to go because it’s home to me. As busy as it gets at night, there are some days I’d ride my bike in the Fall and early Spring when it’s so calm and quiet. You’d love visiting Coney Island because as touristy as it can be, there truly is so much history here and fun you’ll have. Exploring Coney Island should be on everyone’s bucket list for these reasons.
