Welcome to Mexico

Welcome to Mexico! Visiting Mexico is a must especially if you live in the United States because we are just so close! If you’re unsure about visiting touristy resorts, then visit a city like Mexico City, which is filled with Mexican culture. Personally, this destination is on the list for me! I visited Tijuana for a music festival, Baja Beach Fest, and was a great way to visit the less-touristy areas. If you like reggaeton music, I 1000% recommend checking it out! See my top recommendations when visiting Tijuana since that’s the only place I have traveled in Mexico so far. Without further ado, Welcome to Mexico!

Tips for Traveling To Mexico

  1. Learn basic Spanish: Aside from interacting with locals more deeply and showing them that you respect their culture, people forget that in other parts of the world, learning and even knowing English is few and far between. Learning common phrases such as “hi”, “how are you”, “how much does that cost”, “where is the bathroom”, “do you speak English” & “do you know where x spot is”.
  2. Be street smart: This kind of applies everywhere you go but in non-touristy destinations, it’s important not to scream tourist. Wear neutral clothing, don’t wear anything flashy, and try not to be the loud, “American idiot”. If you’re traveling with a group of people that means lay low- don’t cause a scene.
  3. Even if you “act” like a local, tourists stick out like a sore thumb: With that said, understand your surroundings and be alert. Tourists in countries that are “underdeveloped” are targets for pickpocketing, stealing, kidnapping, etc.
  4. Go with your instincts: If you’re waiting at a bus stop for a long time for example and things don’t feel safe – maybe that’s a better time to splurge for the Uber. You’d rather say, “That was a close one” than be on page 1 of the New York Times.
  5. Exchange lots of cash, but don’t carry it all at once with you: In Mexico, cash is king and things are pretty inexpensive. For reference, a Big Mac which costs $5 USD, costs $MX101, meaning that Mexico’s currency is undervalued by almost 20%.

Perfect Guide to Traveling Around Mexico

I have only been to Tijuana for a music festival, but already planning my tour of Mexico for next year. I found this blog linked here to be super helpful. She recommends starting in either Mexico City or Cancun since those flights are the most direct and affordable.

The destination path looks like, Mexico City – Puerto Escondido – Oaxaca – Chipas – Cancun.
