National dishes

A USVI Travel Guide is incomplete without trying some of the country’s staple dishes. Eating like a local is an amazing way to get not only yummy food but a more authentic experience when traveling.

FISH & FUNGI
This hearty meal consists of a flavorful, slow-cooked red snapper—served with “fungi,” a savory, polenta-like dumpling made from cornmeal and okra. The fish is often accompanied by a savory, tangy sauce made with onions, bell peppers, celery, and garlic.

USVI TRAVEL GUIDE: Transportation

  • Air Travel: Direct U.S. flights to St. Thomas (STT) and St. Croix (STX); ferries connect St. Thomas ↔ St. John. No passport required for U.S. citizens.
  • Ferries: Frequent, short rides between islands that are scenic and affordable. The Red Hook Ferry (St. Thomas to St. John) runs every 30–45 minutes.
  • Taxis & Ride Apps: No Uber/Lyft. Shared taxis are common and cheaper. Fares are per person, not per vehicle.
  • Driving: Drive on the left (like the Bahamas), even though cars are U.S.-style. Roads are hilly and winding, so drive slowly and carefully.
  • Tip: Always carry cash for ferries and shared taxis; many small operators don’t take cards.
