PUERTO RICO TRAVEL GUIDE: Transportation

  • Air Travel: San Juan (SJU) is the main hub with smaller regional flights connecting to Vieques & Culebra.
  • Public Transit: San Juan has buses and a metro, but service is not very reliable.
  • Taxis & Ride Apps: Uber works only in the metro San Juan and limited areas; taxis are available at airports and tourist zones.
  • Driving: Renting a car is highly recommended for exploring beaches and mountain towns. (It takes on average 3 hours to drive around the entire island).
  • Ferries: Boats connect to Vieques & Culebra, but they can be inconsistent, so book early. Tip: Roads can be narrow; locals drive fast & stay alert.
