Blue Lagoon Bucket List Destinations Iceland

Layover In Iceland: The Blue Lagoon Edition

Iceland Air flights have been pretty tough to compete with recently. Instead of paying $900 for flights to Europe, you could pay almost half of that if you opt for a layover in Iceland. It was a no-brainer to choose the seven-hour layover on the way home & make a little trip to the Blue Lagoon. The perfect relaxation for an incredible, yet tiring seven-day trip. All of that biking, scootering & walking has led to this moment. Rejuvenation at last!

A Wonder of the World

The Blue Lagoon is considered one of the 25 Wonders of the World. Its natural beauty is so unique which makes it a bucket list experience for everyone. Whether you’re looking to spend a few hours in the country for a few days, The Blue Lagoon is the ultimate rest & relaxation! Iceland’s overarching theme is sustainability & environmentally conscious. The country thrives on ways to become energy efficient. From hydraulic pressure driven by waterfalls to the geothermal pools from active volcanoes around the country, Iceland is a great example of taking advantage of its natural resources. In this case, they might as well make some money off of it.

The Blue Lagoon is part of a network of geothermal pools that has a ton of mineral properties to rejuvenate the skin, aid in anti-wrinkling & even cure skin diseases such as psoriasis & eczema. Silica is one of the main minerals that help create a stronger skin barrier, tighten the skin & give you that flushed, glowing look.

It’s not just a Lagoon- you have steam baths, water pressures, saunas, and two restaurants & with your purchase, you get a free drink & two face masks (mud & silica masks to both exfoliate & rejuvenate the skin. They even have a story time where they share the history of the Blue Lagoons and how elves protect the land! It’s 10000% worth it for all of the unique experiences and natural benefits you get from this rich excursion.

Now a seven-hour layover doesn’t mean seven hours to explore. In fact, it’s usually half. You have to account for security & immigration lines & transportation to and from the lagoon. Although it is very easy to spend eight hours here. In fact, I did my first time. After my experience, you can spend four hours & still have the best time without feeling rushed. Here’s my exact itinerary.

My Itinerary for The Blue Lagoon During My 7-Hour Layover In Iceland

  • 9:30: Bus pickup from the airport (they also have pickups from the city center, Reykjavik)
  • 10:00: After a lil delay & 20 minutes of driving, you’re at The Blue Lagoon
  • 10-10:05: You have an area to leave your luggage for 800ISK or $5.75 USD. (Make sure you take your bathing suit & flip-flops out of your carry-on!
  • 10:05-10:20: Then you’re at reception checking in & getting ready. You have to use your wristband given to you to lock your locker to store your stuff. Afterward, you have to shower your body & hair before entering the lagoon. FOR MY LONG-HAIRED PPL. Over-apply conditioner, don’t rinse it & keep your hair up- the water will destroy your hair.
  • 10:20-1:15:ENJOY THE BLUE LAGOON!
  • 1:15-1:35: Shower & get dressed
  • 1:35-2:00: Eat at the Lava Restaurant (We ordered the cauliflower soup & it was DELICIOUS!
  • 2:15-2:20: Retrieve our luggage
  • 2:20 back on the bus for 2:30 pick up! (Depending on your flight, there are buses from 2:30-7pm!)
  • 2:30-3:00: at the airport
  • 3:00-3:15: through security (this varies per day of course)
  • 4:00 the gate was announced
  • 4:00-4:35- Immigration line
  • 4:35: Boarded plane
  • 5:15: Took off ✈️

Now obviously this wasn’t all planned to the “t”. We wanted to save some time at the end to get ready & check out the restaurant before the bus so we overall played it by ear! This was the rough plan that I did and it shows that you can fit a lot in without realizing it. In the four hours, we were able to do a whole lot which makes this a very manageable layover!
