Fun Day Trips from NYC: Additional Options
- Bannerman Castle: Take the Metro-North up to Breckneck Ridge and you’ll arrive close to Bannerman Castle. It’s a crumbling fortress located on Pollepel Island in the Hudson River, New York. It was built in the early 1900s by Francis Bannerman VI to store military goods for his family’s business, Bannerman’s Army Surplus. Today, the ruins are a historic landmark and popular sightseeing spot. Much of the existing structure has deteriorated due to fires, storms, and neglect. They host events like Farm to Table dinners, Kayaking, and Butterfly Tours that help preserve Bannerman Castle. If you have time, hiking Breakneck Ridge is a lot of fun with incredible views!
- Fire Island: Whether you’re visiting in the summertime or even in the Fall, Fire Island is your go-to spot for a beach paradise. You’re not going to believe it, but it’s only 1.5 hrs from NYC. Known for their iconic beaches, places like Ocean Beach are the main area with stores and nightlife galore. Then you have places like Cherry Grove, which gained a reputation as America’s first gay and lesbian town. Cute spots like the Sunken Forest are places you can’t miss on your trip out East.

Lots of people make these into weekend trips, but if you only have one day. Do not let that stop you. I’ve known plenty of people who visited Philly & even DC for concerts and a lil day trip. The key is to get started on your day early in the morning, sleep on the train (ideal mode of transportation, and get the day going!
- Philadelphia. Philly is more than just the cheesesteaks; it’s the city of Brotherly Love and an important part of our country’s history. Yes, the cheeseteaks are as good as everyone says, but there’s more. Fall in love with early American History at the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross’ House, Elfreth’s Alley, one of the oldest inhabited residential streets in the United States, with a museum that brings you back to life. Other places like Philadelphia’s Magical Gardens and Eastern State Penitentiary are a must. Be sure to visit, and don’t be afraid to embark on a little spontaneous trip to Philly!
- Washington D.C: Washington, D.C has SO much to offer. Similar to Philly, there is are lot of American history with places like the Lincoln Monument, Library of Congress, the Capitol, and the many museums to check out. Hidden gems like the Larz Anderson House and the O Museum in the Maison are so unique. If you’re visiting during spring, the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC is a great time to visit.
