Best Ski Resorts in the Northeast & 5 Reasons To Book Now

The best ski resorts in the Northeast can’t quite compare to out West or in other parts of the world. I have had a handful of good skiing days that make it all worth it. That being said, you can learn to ski at any age, and it’s one of those lifetime sports. After skiing almost 100 times, I have seen literal toddlers ski next to 70-year-old veterans; it’s incredible, actually. The point is that you have basically skiers of every age, which is the perfect reason to start now!

“my first time skiing I skied into a pole and cried the rest of the day”

When I think about how much I have grown & improved, I cannot help but reminisce about my first time skiing. I’ll admit, it’s not easy at first, and it’s hard to control yourself, especially going downhill at pretty intense speeds. Nonetheless, I was going down the mountain, naturally lost control & skied right into a pole. In my head, I was thinking, “if I go towards the pole, I am certain that I will come to a complete stop”, rather than bumping into everyone along the way. Well, now it’s something I laugh about.

Unlock the Best Ski Resorts in the Northeast With the Epic Pass.

Since skiing is not the most affordable sport, the Epic Pass helps you save big. Lift tickets typically range from around $70-$150 per day. Season Passes with EpicPass start as low as $300. I would recommend the Epic Pass, which gives you access to the best ski resorts in the Northeast, out West, and even internationally in Japan and Switzerland. It’s cost-effective and you get 20% lodging, lessons, rentals & great perks you can’t miss out on.

Best Ski Resorts 3 Hours from NYC

  1. Hunter Mountain: This mountain is known for its varied terrain that suits every level of skier or snowboarder. They offer everything from steep double blacks to a whole mountain of moderate blues and gentle greens. It’s an ideal choice for groups with mixed skill levels, since everyone can find runs they enjoy. Among the ski resorts in the region, Hunter is my top pick thanks to its dedication to challenging terrain, well-maintained moguls, terrain parks, and fun events that keep the energy high. The lifts run smoothly and efficiently, too, so you can spend more time on the snow and less time waiting.
  2. Windham Mountain: I had to start with my old stomping grounds, the mountain where I learned to ski and grew so much in the sport. This mountain has recently changed ownership to a more “luxury club” vibe so which is why I don’t go here. After looking, they offer relatively affordable lift tickets at $75/day (depending on holidays/peak season), so another option only 30 minutes away from Hunter Mountain.
  3. Jack Frost/Big Boulder: If you are new to skiing & I mean brand new, then Big Boulder/Jack Frost is the mountain for you. The slopes are all very easy with fewer people, shorter lines, and enough space to practice. This is perfect if you’re focusing on learn technique without having to wait 500 years to get on the slopes. Just double-check on their website before you book anything if they’re open for the season- they were closed for the 2024/5 season.

Best Ski Resorts in the Northeast 4+ Hours from NYC

The farther up North you go, the better the conditions are. You also get to see more natural powdery snow. I’d recommend making a trip up to these mountains at least once to experience it for yourself. The skiing is top-tier, and you’ll soon realize how they made it to the list of Best Ski Resorts in the Northeast.

  1. Mount Snow: A top mountain of mine, probably even better than Hunter, is Mount Snow up in Vermont. First off this mountain is huge. Compared to Hunter & Windham, there are tons of hidden trails and places to get lost in Mount Snow. Great for varied skiiers, there are pretty much an even amount of green, blue, black, and even a whole section for tricks if you are interested in that! The scenery is also picture-perfect with snow-capped mountains with a blue sky backdrop- you’d think I am making this up.
  2. Okemo: Another great option is Okemo, just an hour North of Mount Snow. Also included in the Epic Pass, Okemo has great trail conditions and overall had nothing bad to say about it. If you’re visiting Mount Snow for a long weekend, I’d consider checking Okemo out for at least one day.

Safety Precautions While Skiing

With the weather being such a factor in the conditions, not every slope is going to be in the most perfect condition. That is, unfortunately, the reality of skiing in the Northeast and especially going to mountains where it does not snow too often. These resorts do their best and make their own snow to maintain the slopes, but since the sport is pretty weather-dependent, it is very difficult at times. With that said, I would be cautious when you go skiing.

  1. Take Extra Precaution: If it rains the night before and the temperatures are below freezing, not only is it dangerous to drive on potentially icy roads with black ice, but you are most likely going to ski on ice, which is not ideal and could cause injuries.
  2. Don’t Compare: On that note, keep in mind that the sport is pretty dangerous. When you are first starting, you are not going to look like someone who has been skiing for 10 years. In my eleven years of experience, if I tried to attempt things I do now as a newbie, I would get seriously hurt, so please do not compare yourself to anyone, and don’t try anything unless you have the basics down. Especially with so many stories in the news about people getting injured and even killed by reckless skiers unable to stop, it just means that it’s that much more important to be cautious and take precautions

There You Have It

With that said, it’s safe to say that you have your ultimate guide to skiing in the Northeast, and I hope it inspires you to get out of your comfort zone and start booking those ski trips! Remember to have fun with the sport and be safe, and I promise you, you will get out of this sport everything you put into it, so keep working hard and don’t give up!

Lastly, I would recommend getting the Epic Mix app. This app has all-inclusive access to forecasts on lift lines, interactive trail maps, trail grooming status, GPS location and tracking, safety info & more! Download the Epic Mix App: https://www.epicpass.com/benefits/epicmix.aspx
