Best Places in the Algarve

Portimao is a quaint, local fishing village that is one of the best places to stay in the Algarve. It has a slow-paced ambiance with some nightlife sprinkled in during the summertime. Its roots go back to Portugal’s important Age of Discovery. Here, the town thrived off of shipbuilding, fishing, and trade. In the 19th & 20th centuries, this town saw additional prosperity from the boom of the sardine industry, where canning sardines put Portimao on the map. Now, it thrives on tourism, so visiting this city helps pay homage to its rich history and offers a new perspective in the modern age.

Tips for Visiting the Algarve in Portugal

  1. The Algarve region comprises a few places such as Lagos, Carvoeiro, Sagres, Albufeira, Portimão, and more! Generally, it’s about a four-hour bus ride from Lisbon, so check availability and times that work best for you (see my guide below).
  2. Plan your stay after Monday. They fish every Monday, so you’ll get the freshest batch.
  3. Each city is unique in its own way, consider renting a car if you’d rather road trip through all the beach towns.

Best Places in the Algarve: Which Algarve City Suits You Best?

  1. Lagos is one of the most popular towns in the Algarve, with tourism numbers doubling in the peak summer season. It has one of the most iconic views of Portugal’s coastline, Ponta da Piedade. One of the more popular beaches is Praia Dona Ana, and don’t forget to explore the Old Town. If you love photography, surfing, adventure & a family vacation, this spot is perfect! Check out more things to do and an interactive map here.
  2. Portimão was once a city of rich fishing and shipbuilding history, thriving off the sardine market, but now relies on tourism in the modern world. This city is more relaxing and offers a peaceful ambiance in case you need a little relaxation. If you love living like a local, this is the spot for you!
  3. Albufeira is the go-to destination for those seeking lively energy, nightlife, and plenty of things to do. It’s the party capital of the Algarve, known for its buzzing Strip filled with bars, clubs, and entertainment. If you also love history, they have an Old Town where you can explore the city’s roots. This city is very family-focused, with waterparks and tours galore.
  4. Faro, while this city does not have the breathtaking Portugal caves like the other cities, but offers so much more. This is one of the closest cities to Spain & Andalusía, making it a perfect way to see both countries. The charming town is best if you love historic things to do in the town and less of a beach vacation.
  5. Sagres, located at the southwestern tip of Portugal, feels like the end of the world in the best way. It’s a rugged, windswept town known for its natural beauty, quiet vibe, and if you like surfing, this is your spot. The town is small and simple and perfect for outdoorsy people looking to unplug.

Cutest Airbnb in Portimao

If you’re in Portimao, it’s worth checking out this Airbnb. The host’s vision was all about sustainability. Everything in this house is so unique and intentional, and it had us feeling like locals. I appreciated the communication between the host, who also let us check in early. It’s in a great location, and they had bikes for us to get around on. The place is stunning and practical, with everything we needed for our stay. The host has a whole section for recommendations and gave us a warm welcome into the city. The place was so cozy, and P.S. you can even see the stars at night from the skylight.

Things To Do In Portimao

One of the main attractions is seeing the Benagil caves. The meet-up spot was only 15 minutes from the perfect Airbnb. Of course, the tour is pending weather at sea, and the tour guides are very communicative with you and can help answer any questions beforehand. While you’re on your way, leave any valuables with the tour guide’s car because it will get wet; it’s a speedboat after all.

Our lovely tour guides at Atlantis Tours through Get Your Guide recommended we visit Praia de Coveiro, a stunning beach with beautiful caves and restaurants. Perfect for a beach day or an afternoon swim in the Algarve.

There You Have It

Portimao and the rest of the Algarve deserve it’s own trip, but if you have limited time, this guide summarizes exactly which city fits your needs. Looking for a lot of nightlife, Albuferia is your go-to. Personally, Portimao was the perfect break from walking non-stop in Lisbon. The local feel definitely added to the experience, and just like every trip, I can picture myself living there one day and certainly staying at the Airbnb again!
